Melba toast is the perfect accompaniment over the festive season. It can be dipped into molten cheese, served as part of a cheeseboard and served with pate too. You can also use it as a crunchy base for various canapes. Here is how to make Melba Toast.

How To Make Melba Toast

One of the best things about Melba Toast is how simple it is to make. It’s also a fantastic way to use up bread before it goes out of date.

I often buy yellow sticker bread and Melba Toast is one of my go-to things to make with it.

Melba Toast is very cheap to make, especially if you’re using a reduced loaf. I love getting cheap bakery yellow stickers, where bread can often be reduced to as little as 5p or 10p a loaf.

It’s a great way to bulk out a cheeseboard and you could even serve it with soup if you wanted to.

What Is Melba Toast?

Melba Toast is a thin and light crispbread which you can buy ready-made in supermarkets or make at home yourself.

One of the great things about making your own Melba Toast is that it can be made ahead of time so it’s great for using at a Dinner Party or serving with Christmas Lunch. It’s perfect for if you want to feel like you’ve made something rather than just serving bread or crackers.

What Bread Do I Need To Make Melba Toast?

To make my Melba Toast I used Kingsmill half and half but it really doesn’t matter what type of bread you use. It can be brown or white, fresh or going a bit stale. You could also use a crusty loaf if you had one that needed using up.

I used two slices of bread which would be enough to serve two people. If you need to make more you can easily double or triple this recipe and make it in batches.

If you want the Melba Toasts for canapes then you might want to cut the bread into small squares before cooking.

Ingredients

  • 2 Slices Bread Bread can be wholemeal or white
  • Pate of your choice to serve

Instructions

  • Remove the crusts from your bread (if you're looking for a way to use them up see this recipe) and cut each slice in half to create two rectangles.
  • Using a bread a knife, very carefully slice each rectangle of bread into two much thinner slices. This can be a little bit tricky so do it slowly.
  • Take a rolling pin and roll over each slice until very thin.
  • Put the pieces of bread onto a baking tray and grill on medium for 2-3 minutes before turning and grilling for a further two minutes. As the bread is so thin it can burn easily so don't take your eyes off it - it's done when it starts to go golden brown. Appliances do vary so you may need to add a minute or two.
  • You could also make Melba Toast in the oven baking for around 10 minutes on gas mark 3 or 160c
  • Repeat as needed for as much Melba Toast as you want to make. Store in an airtight container for a day or two. Serve with Pate, soup, cheese or simply top with butter.
