This easy chocolate bread and butter pudding recipe is perfect for using bread rolls that might have gone a little stale or just aren’t quite as fresh as you would like.

One of the foods that most often goes to waste in the U.K is bread. There are lots of ways to use up bread before it goes stale or mouldy and this easy chocolate bread and butter pudding is one of them.

While I’ve used bread rolls in this recipe, you could also use sliced bread, croissants, or brioche – to be honest any type of bread that needs using up would work well.

This easy chocolate bread and butter pudding recipe uses Nutella but you can also use your own-brand chocolate spread if you want to.

As I wanted to keep this recipe simple and cheap, I’ve kept the ingredients to an absolute minimum while keeping the taste great.

This bread and butter pudding recipe does not use cream – so if you don’t have any in you can still make this!

Despite being called chocolate bread and butter pudding I’ve not used any butter – the Nutella Chocolate spread is already high in fat and I find adding butter as well makes the pudding too greasy.

I’ve also left out the sugar – again the sweetness in the dish is provided by the chocolate spread although you can add a sprinkling if you like your pudding extra sweet.

As I usually serve the chocolate bread and butter pudding with custard I find this adds enough sweetness.

While this recipe serves two it can easily be doubled or even tripled to make a larger portion. You could use any variety of chocolate spread such as white chocolate or chocolate orange.

You could also add chocolate chips or a pinch of cinnamon if you wanted to.

  • Layer the chocolate cover bread into an ovenproof dish, cutting to size if needed. Once the bottom layer is complete pour over half of the egg, milk and chocolate mixture.
  • Sprinkle with a pinch of salt (and cinnamon and chocolate chips if using).
  • Use a fork to press the bread into the liquid. Repeat with the second layer of bread and using the rest of the milk and egg mixture
  • Leave to rest for 10 minutes before baking in the oven for 30-35 minutes. When cooked the pudding should be crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. As with baking a cake, insert a knife in the centre and if it comes out clean the pudding is cooked.

Notes

If you're worried your chocolate bread and butter pudding isn't quite cooked in the middle, cover with tin foil and cook for an extra 10 to 15 minutes to stop the top of the pudding from burning.
