Everything I Bought Second Hand For My Baby Boy

One thing I’m very passionate about is shopping second hand. Today I wanted to share with you everything I bought second hand for my baby and how much everything cost. I’ll also be taking a look at the few things that it’s best to buy brand new.
I’ve not really mentioned my pregnancy here on the blog or social media. Two consecutive losses before this pregnancy meant that I was a bit nervous to share my news with the world until I knew that everything was okay.
When my daughter was born almost five years ago, I did buy some items second-hand, although not as much as I would have liked.
This time around, I really wanted to buy as much as I possibly could second hand and of course, I am lucky enough to be in a position where we already have all of the big things such as a cot, pram, changing bag etc already as we kept them knowing we would eventually have another baby.
Luckily I chose very neutral colours so they all work for us this time even though we are having a boy!
We’ve also had family members buy us a few things we needed, such as a brand new mattress for the cot and some muslins.
Why I Prefer To Shop Second Hand
There are lots of great reasons to shop second hand, the main two being that it saves money and is much better for the environment.
My passion for pre-loved fashion has increased hugely in recent years and is something I write about a lot here on my blog. Almost all of my own and my daughter’s clothes are purchased second hand and I don’t see why my new baby should be any different either.
Everything I Bought Second Hand For My Baby
Below is everything I bought second hand during my pregnancy. For items I purchased on Vinted I have also included the cost of postage and Vinted fees in the total.
It’s worth mentioning that there are a few baby items that should not be bought second-hand due to safety reasons – this includes mattresses and car seats. Most other items are fine as long as they are in good condition, including clothes, cloth nappies and nursery furniture such as changing tables.

Baby Clothes
The first thing I looked for on Vinted was baby clothing bundles as I couldn’t use anything I’d saved from when I had my daughter. I bought a combination of newborn, 1-3 months and 3-6 months sizes.
Bundles are a great way to save money when shopping on Vinted as you get much better value for money and you only pay for one lot of postage.
Bundle 1 – £10.15 for 85 items (12p per item)
Bundle 2 – £14.47 120 items (12p per item)
Bundle 3 – £13.13 newborn outfits (50p per item)
As you can see, the cost per item works out at much less than buying new and two of the bundles contained lots of brand new with tags items which hadn’t even been worn.
I also had far more than I needed after buying these bundles and just didn’t have the room to store everything so I sold some surplus baby grows and vests on Facebook Marketplace for £12.

Bibs & Muslins
I bought a lovely set of Bibs & Muslins which cost £6.43. These were all brand new with tags.
Swaddles
I also bought 3 swaddles which cost £4.81. These weren’t something I used with our daughter and I wasn’t sure how well we’d get on with them, so it wasn’t something I wanted to spend a huge amount of money on.
Carry Cot & Hood
While I love our pram and fully intended on using it again for this baby, we only had a buggy attachment which had lots of complicated straps.
I remember the first time I took our little girl out in it and it took me ages to get her strapped in by which time she was screaming the place down!
I managed to find the right carry cot for our pram on Vinted for £17 and I thought I’d be able to attach the hood from our existing pram as it’s interchangeable.
Unfortunately, I was wrong – our pram is a slightly earlier model than I realised, so we needed to buy a new hood too.
(I did also have to buy a new mattress for the carrycot which cost £15 but I’ve not included that in the total as it wasn’t second-hand and had to be bought new for safety reasons)

Bottles and Sterilizer
The next thing I needed was a new sterilizer and bottles. I opted for Tommee Tippee as this was the brand I had used previously.
The sterilised was used but in good condition. The bottles were all new and still in the wrapping apart from one. The bottles also included two cool bags to use when out and about.

Unfortunately, baby boy didn’t get on with these bottles so we ended up buying some MAM Bottles brand new last minute as he wasn’t putting on weight and this was what the midwife recommended would help.
Shnuggle Bath
I really like the size of these compared to a standard baby bath and this one cost less than half of what they usually retail for.

While I love shopping in charity shops, the ones near me just don’t seem to have much in the way of baby and children’s clothing items, which is why the majority of what I have bought came from vinted.

I’ll probably buy lots more as baby grows or as we need more of things and generally speaking I’ll do my best to shop second-hand, including for birthdays and Christmas as well as for everyday items like clothing.

Overall I think this is really good value for everything we needed and I know we were lucky to able to use some of the bigger items from when we had our daughter.
With maternity leave looming and subsequently a huge drop in income I’m really pleased I was able to save so much money by shopping second hand!
