Having a new baby can come with a myriad of expenses. And while they may only need a few baby grows to begin with, they soon start to grow. Add in a couple of incidents with leaky nappies and sticky burps and you’ll find yourself needing lots and lots of baby clothes. If money is tight, here are some of the best places to buy baby clothes on a budget.

When you’re having a new baby, costs can quickly spiral out of control, especially if it’s your first or you don’t have anything from your other child or children.

However, there are still plenty of ways you can save money on baby clothes. I’m going to take a look at some of the best places to buy baby clothes on a budget, covering both brand new and second-hand options as well as buying online.

New Baby Clothes On A Budget

First of all, I wanted to start with the best places to buy brand new baby clothes on a budget. While I love to buy second-hand, I know that others do prefer to buy new and I do dress my daughter in a mix of both.

Buy Baby Clothes On A Budget: Supermarkets

Most U.K supermarkets now carry a range of baby clothes which are very budget-friendly. Sainsbury’s (TU) and Asda (George) tend to have the biggest range of clothes while Aldi and Lidl’s baby clothes range tend to be part of their middle aisle offer so are available sometimes and not others.

Tesco (F&F) and Morrisons (Nutmeg) both also carry baby clothes that are fairly budget-friendly.

All supermarkets have sales throughout the year, so buy out of season if you can for extra savings. Also, look out for the TU 25% off which happens three or four times a year and applies to sale items as well as full price. Personally, Sainsbury’s is my top choice for quality so this is worth looking out for and don’t forget to use your Nectar card as well!

Primark

Now, I know not everyone will agree with shopping at Primark for ethical reasons, but there is no escaping the fact it is one of the best places to buy baby clothes on a budget.

Primark’s baby range includes everything you could possibly need for your new arrival including baby grows, outfits, socks, booties and more. Shopping out of season can often see further discounts with items often reduced to 50p or £1 for basics.

When you’re done with your Primark baby clothes, if they are in reasonable condition do consider passing them on to friends and family or donating them so they are reused if possible.

There are also lots of brand new with tags Primark baby clothes on Vinted which may work out at the same cost as buying new so always worth looking at.

H&M

While maybe not quite as cheap as some of the options mentioned above, H&M does have some pretty budget-friendly baby clothing options. They also have some items that you don’t often see elsewhere – such as leggings with feet so little one doesn’t need socks!

Like with Primark, you can get baby items for as little as £1 if you catch the sales at the right time. The green shorts below are from H&M (the denim shorts are from Peacocks)

TK Max

Overall, I think most people find TK Max can be a bit hit and miss. But there are plenty of bargains to be had if you’re happy to spend some time having a rummage about. TK Max is also a great option if you’d prefer some designer baby items while sticking to a budget.

As TK Max source their stock from high street brands and department stores that have been unable to sell it is a more ethical choice too.

The Best of the Rest

As well as the places I’ve mentioned already, there are quite a few other high-street stores to consider too:

  • Peacocks
  • Boots
  • Next

While these aren’t the most budget-friendly if you can find sales they do offer reasonably good value for money.

Second-Hand Baby Clothes On A Budget

Slow fashion is something I am very passionate about and the majority of my own and my daughter’s clothes are second-hand.

While I did buy some new items when she was little I also bought a lot of second-hand clothing too.

Second-hand can be especially good for items your baby might only wear once or twice such as a themed Halloween or Christmas outfit.

Buying items second hand won’t always mean they have been worn – we were given so much clothing our little girl didn’t end up wearing which I ended up selling brand new with the tags still on.

Vinted

Vinted is my absolute favourite place to buy second-hand clothes. Vinted works in a similar way to eBay except there isn’t any bidding – you simply pay the price you see.

Many sellers offer discounts if you buy more than one item and this can help reduce postage costs too. I usually try to buy big bundles to keep costs down. You can also favourite items to come back to later and the seller may offer a discount to encourage you to buy.

eBay

eBay is probably the most well know place to buy second hand and new baby clothes on a budget and there are definitely some bargains to be had.

I do find with eBay there is more competition and bundles tend to go for more than I was prepared to pay for them but if you want to buy designer and higher-end clothes for less it’s a great place to start.

Shpock

Shpock is pretty similar to Vinted. There are lots of bargains to be had but personally, I don’t find it as user-friendly as some of the other second-hand buying and selling apps.

Buy Baby Clothes On A Budget: Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is great for finding second-hand baby clothes in your local area. There are no fees and most people are happy for you to pick items up, so no postage costs either. Occasionally sellers may be happy to deliver items for a small fee or you could always ask for postage.

I sold some clothes on Facebook Marketplace recently and was really surprised at how many people were asking me to post them!

Mum 2 Mum Markets

There are lots of variations of these types of markets all around the country, this just happens to be the one local to me. I saw them on Facebook when I was pregnant and decided to attend one of their events.

It does cost around £2 per person for entry but this was more than made up for by the amount we saved. Everything was in really good condition and the prices were very reasonable. We bought vests, baby grows, baby booties, a baby bouncer and a play mat.

I love that it’s directly helping other parents to sell their old stuff and make some extra cash and doing it in person meant we could take a good look at the condition of items before purchasing.

You can find out more about Mum 2 Mum markets on their website. Our experience was excellent and it’s something I would recommend trying out if you’re looking to buy baby clothes on a budget.

These are my top choices for where to buy baby clothes on a budget, are there any you would add? Let me know in the comments!
