Many couples are now eschewing traditional wedding cakes in favour of a wedding cake made of cheese. While not for everyone, there are lots of brilliant reasons to choose a cheese wedding cake, the first being it can be much cheaper than a normal layered wedding cake.

When you get married it’s worth remembering your wedding day is all about you and the person you love. If you want a super traditional day then go for it, however, if you want some more unusual elements to your day you should be able to have those too.

Lots of elements of my own wedding day were pretty non-traditional – we had a wedding celebrant instead of a vicar or registrar. We had a wedding cake made of Rice Krispies. We had a handfasting ceremony and jumped over a broom. Doing your wedding your way is so important.

So, if you want the cheese, have the cheese! As if you needed any more convincing, here are five reasons to have a cheese wedding cake.

5 Reasons To Have A Cheese Wedding Cake

 1. It Can Be Significantly Cheaper

Having a cheese wedding cake can be significantly cheaper than a traditional cake. Several of the major supermarkets offer towers of cheese that can be preordered and prices start from around £30 for enough cheese for 25ish people to this wedding cheese tower which costs £160 but serves 90-120 people.

These Cakes made of cheese don’t actually need to be ordered too far in advance either which is perfect if you’re planning a bit of a last-minute celebration. M&S need just four days notice, Tesco’s need six.

As a quick comparison M&S Wedding Cakes that serve 110 people start at around £250. Buying from an independent wedding cake maker would cost significantly more.

2. A Cheese Wedding Cake is Less Disaster Prone

Traditional wedding cakes can be pretty delicate – the more layers of cake there are, the more chance there is of tilting or subsidence. It’s also pretty easy for the decorations to get damaged in transit to your chosen wedding venue. If you’re planning a summer wedding there’s the risk of the heat melting the icing, especially on a ‘naked cake’.

A cheese wedding cake will be far less prone to disaster, small amounts of damage won’t show and it’s super easy to assemble once it’s at the venue.

3. It Can Double Up As Evening Food

Catering your own wedding isn’t something I would advise, but if you do, a cheese wedding cake is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. Simply add a selection of crackers, bread, pickles and chutneys and voila!

Evening food is sorted and you’ll have saved loads of money too. Pickles and chutneys can be bought well ahead of time to help spread the cost or you could make your own special wedding chutney to serve.

There are some venues that will you let you do this too – they may want to provide the cheese wedding cake themselves, but you’ll still be making a saving as you won’t be buying a cake. It’s always worth asking!

4. Cheese! All The Cheese!

We had caterers in for the evening part of our wedding, but honestly, I think I’d rather have tucked into a massive pile of cheese.

The majority of people like cheese and as long you serve cheddar as one of the options you can’t really go too far wrong.

My top choice would be Stilton as I love blue cheese, but realise it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Etiquette dictates cheese should always be served in odd numbers and I do think it looks nicer this way on a cheeseboard or stacked up as your cheese wedding cake.

5. You can still have cake

Having a cheese wedding cake doesn’t mean you need to forgo cake completely – it just gives lots more options if doesn’t have to be the centrepiece of the day and means you won’t need to spend nearly as much money. Cupcakes are often a popular choice at weddings – the ones pictured below are just £3.59 from Lidl for 12. That would mean you could provide cakes for 100 guests for just under £33, bargain! They currently offer two different selections – chocolate and fruit.
