Are you thinking about giving the Cheddar Cashback app a try? I’ve been testing it out for a little while now and this post covers what I thought about the app, how easy it is to use and how it compares with other cashback websites such as Topcashback and Quidco.

Update 24/04/2023: Cheddar have recently updated how the app works and you now need to refer two new people per month to unlock cashback offers with the most popular retailers such as Mcdonalds, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

This is really disappointing move as referring two new people per month won’t be possible for the majority of users and without cashback from these retailers, the app won’t be worth using for many.

I’m really hoping Cheddar rethink this change in the near future.

What Is The Cheddar App?

The Cheddar App is an app that allows you to make person-to-person payments as well as earn cashback at certain retailers.

For myself, I haven’t used the payments feature as it’s rare I need to send money to friends, and even when I do I tend to use Monzo where I have everyone’s details listed or Paypal.

To use the Cheddar App and receive cashback, you will need to use open banking and allow it to

Cheddar Cashback App Review

I’ve been using the Cheddar Cashback App for a few months now and wanted to share what I thought of it.

First, setting up an account with Cheddar was easy and only took a few minutes. Cashback tracks and becomes available quickly and when I requested funds to be transferred to my bank account, this happened pretty instantly.

What Are The Pros of Using The Cheddar App?

Here are some of the pros of using the Cheddar App:

  • Works passively, so once you’ve connected your bank account there is no need to remember to click through a website.
  • Cashback can be earned on both online and in-store purchases.
  • Cheddar includes supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and Co-op and food retailers such as Mcdonalds, Greggs and JustEat.
  • Payments of your cashback are very quick and easy.
  • So far, I’ve not had any cashback declined. Conversely, my last three transactions through TopCashback have been declined and only one was reinstated when I queried it.
  • You can double up on cashback. For example, if you buy something from Greggs you can get cashback from both Cheddar and Airtime rewards.

What Are The Cons of Using The Cheddar App?

As with anything, there are some cons to using the Cheddar App.

  • Need to link to your bank with open banking which might not be for everyone.
  • Cashback rates can be quite low, so if you’re not a big spender it might take a while to build up a decent amount of cashback.

Which Retailers Are On The Cheddar Cashback App?

There are loads of popular retailers on the Cheddar app offering cashback of between 1 and 10%. Cashback may be higher on first purchases and then reduce slightly for subsequent purchases.

  • McDonald’s
  • Sainsbury’s
  • Co-op
  • Trainline
  • BooHoo
  • Wish
  • House of Fraser
  • Cafe Nero
  • Game
  • Sports Direct
  • Greggs
  • TFL
  • Starbucks……Plus Many More.

New retailers are being added to the Cheddar cashback app all the time, so make sure you keep checking back to if any of your favourites have been added recently.

Is The Cheddar Cashback App Safe To Use?

Cheddar is regulated by the FSA meaning that they are safe to use. However, using the Cheddar app does involve open banking and while Cheddar doesn’t have access to your security details, I know not everyone is comfortable doing this.

Is The Cheddar App Free To Use?

Yes, another great thing about the Cheddar App is that it is completely free to use.

Is Cheddar Better Than Other Cashback Websites And Apps?

There are definitely some things that I feel are currently giving Cheddar the edge over some of the other cashback sites and apps out there such as Top Cashback.

Cheddar works passively, so once you’re all set up you’ll automatically earn cashback at any of the listed retailers that you shop with.

There’s no need to remember to go through a website each time you shop like you would with TopCashback or Quidco.

While Cheddar works in a similar way to the Airtime Rewards App, sometimes it’s preferable to have money in your bank account now rather than money off your phone bill at the end of the month.

Cheddar also allows you to double up on cashback. For example, if you shop at a Cheddar retailer like Greggs, that’s also on Airtime rewards, you’ll get cashback on both apps.

This also applies online, so if you shop at Sports Direct through TopCashback you’ll also earn cashback from Cheddar too.

I also really like the fact that Cheddar has lots of retailers that other companies don’t.

As someone who is fairly thrifty and prefers to buy second-hand, I don’t make a huge amount of cashback through sites like TopCashback and Quidco.

However, with Cheddar, there are lots of supermarkets included such as Sainsbury’s and the Co-op.

We have a Co-op at the end of our road which I regularly use for top-up shops and yellow sticker items so being able to earn cashback on those things (even if it’s only 1%!) is a big bonus for me!

At the end of the day, I think the Cheddar cashback app is a great way to earn cashback without really having to think about it. While the rates for some retailers are low, my plan is just to let it slowly build up over time and cash out every few months.
