Making bread can often seem like a complicated or difficult process, and while there’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh bread baking in your oven, there is a lot that can go wrong. I like to keep things super simple with these three-ingredient dough sticks that can be made from ingredients you’d typically have in your cupboard and fridge.

Bread can be pretty difficult to come by at the moment during the current pandemic so lots of us may well be thinking about baking our own.

These dough sticks are easy to make and perfect for getting the children involved with too. While they aren’t quite as nice a proper loaf they are perfect for dipping into pasta or olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It’s also easy to add a few other ingredients for extra flavour if you have them. I’ve used rosemary and garlic as an example below but other options could include olives, thyme or sprinkling the dough sticks with sesame or poppy seeds.

Reasons I love making dough sticks:

  • Ready in 10 minutes, bakes in 15-20
  • Cheap to prepare
  • No yeast needed
  • Can be made from typical store cupboard ingredients
  • Easy to add other ingredients for extra flavour

Dough Stick Ingredients

350grams of Self raising flour (plus extra for dusting)
300grams natural yoghurt
1 tbsp of baking powder

(Optional)
1 tsp Garlic puree
1 tsp Dried rosemary

Makes around 10 Doughsticks

Method

  1. Preheat oven to gas mark 7 (220 degrees c)
  2. Mix ingredients together in a bowl until a dough forms
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 1-2 minutes (add rosemary and garlic here if using) If the dough feels too wet add a little bit more flour
  4. Place the dough back in the bowl, cover with a cloth, and rest for 5 minutes
  5. Remove the dough and split into 10 even balls
  6. Roll each ball into a long sausage shape as pictured below
  7. Place on a baking tray (or two depending on size) and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden
