Freezer Garlic Bread – How To Make Garlic Bread For The Freezer

Lots of my recipes recently have involved ways to use up bread. This is because bread is one of the most wasted foods in the U.K. We waste around 90,000 tonnes of bread each year as a nation. 36% of that wastage comes from people not eating their crusts – something I am 100% guilty of! Here’s how to make freezer garlic bread that can be cooked from frozen as and when you need it.
Freezer Garlic Bread
I am a big bread fan. Who isn’t? But as one of those things that has a pretty short shelf life, it’s worth knowing plenty of ways to use up odds and ends of bread. There are so many ways it can be saved from the food waste bin – from freezing to making breadcrumbs.
First I am going to list a few of the bread recipes I already use on a regular basis:
- Bread Crust Croutons
- Garlic & Herb Seasoned Breadcrumbs
- Homemade Tortilla Chips (for wraps that need using up)
- Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding
Freezer Garlic Bread: Making Garlic Bread For The Freezer
Often at the weekends, my husband and I will buy a loaf of crusty bread to enjoy. It feels like a nice treat and we usually use it to make breakfast sandwiches, to dip in a soup at lunchtime or to go with a simple ploughman’s on a Sunday afternoon.
There have been occasions though where we’ve not managed to eat the whole loaf and of course, fresh crusty bread goes stale much quicker than a normal white loaf.

One way we like to use it up is to turn it into garlic bread for the freezer. This can then be cooked from frozen when we need it.
I like to freeze slices individually so that we can grab one piece as and when we need it. This works with any type of bread – baguettes, bread rolls, whatever needs using up. The garlic butter can be doubled or halved as needed and any that doesn’t get used will keep really well in the fridge.
In recipe below, I suggest cooking the garlic bread in the oven but you also cook under the grill if you defrost first, or it could be cooked in the air fryer from frozen.

Freezer Garlic Bread
Ingredients
- 4 Leftover / Stale bread slices
- 2 tbsp Butter
- 2 Garlic cloves crushed (or 1tsp garlic puree)
- Herbs to taste (fresh or dried) I like to use fresh parsley but dried herbs work well too, especially Italian mixed herbs
Instructions
- Make the garlic butter - melt the butter until soft using short 10 second blasts in the microwave. Add the garlic and herbs and give it a good mix.

- Spread the garlic butter mixture over the slices of bread. Any leftover garlic butter can will keet for up to a week in the fridge.

- Place the slices on a baking tray and place in the freezer for around 90 minutes or until frozen solid.

- Once frozen, place the slices of garlic bread either in a container or reusable freezer bag (or if neither of these is an option they can also be individually wrapped in cling film.
- To cook from frozen, bake in the oven for 20 minutes at 180 degrees Celcius. This will produce a lovely crisp garlic bread.
