£3 Ikea Spice Rack Bookshelves
I love coming up with thrifty ideas for around our home and these Ikea bookshelves, which are actually made from ‘Bekvam’ spice racks are a perfect example of that. We’ve used them in our daughter’s bedroom to display some of her books and this means they are easily accessible to her whenever she wants to read them.
When living a frugal lifestyle, it’s fairly common to repurpose and reuse things. I also like finding things that I can use for different purposes around my home. Lots of household items can be used in other ways and sometimes this can save you money too.

The kitchen department in Ikea may not be your first thought when it comes shelving for your children’s bedrooms. But these spice racks actually make perfect bookshelves for housing children’s books. Even better, they cost just £3 each.

If you’re looking to find these in your local Ikea or on the Ikea website they are called ‘Bekvam – Spice Rack’. If you don’t live near an Ikea they can also be found on eBay although they do typically seem to have quite a large mark up on the price.
We chose to leave our spice racks unpainted as we felt the natural wood went well with some other items in our daughter’s room. However, you could paint them pretty much any colour you wanted to go with your chosen decor or theme.
These bookshelves make it easy for children to see and reach the books which I find helps encourage reading We rotate the books on the shelves too so there are lots of ‘new’ choices (or old favourites!) and our daughter chooses a new book to bring downstairs for the day each morning which is then put away at the back of the shelf at night.
These shelves also work well in Children’s playrooms or could be used to display cookery books in the kitchen.

Here are a few things I love about these thrifty Ikea shelves.
- They are a much cheaper alternative to normal shelves.
- Easily hold lots of books – I’d say they hold around 8 books each depending on thickness.
- These shelves can be customized to match the colours and theme of the bedroom or playroom.
- A bright and colourful way to display books.
- Helps encourage children to read by being easily accessible.

How To Install the Shelves
I’m going to be totally honest here and admit that I’m not a whizz a DIY and it’s my husband that does this sort of thing around the house. However, I have found a lovely YouTube Video which shows you exactly what to do far better than I could explain it myself!
