When I first started my blog, someone commented that having the word ‘Somerset’ in the name would make people think that the money-saving tips I shared could only be used by people in Somerset. Four years and two best frugal and thrift blog awards later, I think I have proved them wrong. One county that is known for being thrifty, however, is Yorkshire.
In honour of Yorkshire Day on August 1st (did you know counties have specific celebratory days? I had a read of ‘Save It Like Safe Hands’ to see if this Savvy Somerset girl could learn a thing or two from those frugal thrifters oop north.
Become a ‘Meat Influencer’
One of David’s tips in Save It Like Safe Hands is to use your local butcher more. This is a great shout as a butcher shop will have lots of cheaper cuts of meat such as shin and neck which you might not always find in the supermarket. You can also grab some offal like faggots and liver which make the thriftiest of meals.
David also suggests raving about expensive cuts of meat while you’re in the queue to encourage others to buy them – your butcher will love you for it and offer the odd freebie or a leaner bit of meat in return.
While I don’t think I’ll be adding the term ‘Meat Influencer’ to my C.V any time soon, I am definitely guilty of not shopping with my local butcher as we tend to just pick up meat with our weekly shop at the supermarket. I could well be missing out on savings here and I’ll definitely be heading to my local butcher’s shop this weekend!

Next up: Drop The Chop
Unlike some other footballers (looking at you, David Beckham) good old Safe Hands decided to go for one look when it came to his hair and stuck to it. David’s ponytail became his trademark and although it was much-derided, he knew it was good for his wallet when only occasional trips to the barber were required to chop off his split ends.
When it comes to mop chopping, however, I can do one better as I am not ashamed to admit I frequently cut my own hair at home – visiting the hairdressers just once or twice a year. It might be that having very curly hair makes any scissor mishaps easier to conceal, but I think cutting my own hair at home saves even more money than Mr Seamans occasional trips to Shearer’s.

Joining Forces
Always a team player, In Save it Like Safe Hands, David suggests getting together with neighbours to share expensive equipment like lawn mowers and hedge trimmers and he seems to have got me on this one too! While I do often share things with my immediate friends and family, I don’t always think about extending that courtesy to my neighbours.
Sharing tools is also a great way to encourage a sense of community where you live – something I could definitely try harder at and save myself some cash in the process!

Bring Your Own
I love eating at restaurants and trying new foods, anything to avoid doing the washing up! I’ve written a lot about saving money on food and how to save money when eating out, but this is one of the little known tips that to be honest I had totally forgotten about!
David makes an excellent point about finding restaurants that let you bring your own wine. As much as I love a glass of vino, a wine connoisseur I am not. I am just as happy with a cheap bottle of plonk from the local shop as I am with a fancy bottle from a restaurant.
Next time I go out for a meal with friends I am definitely looking for somewhere that lets me bring a bottle!

So, it turns out that I did learn rather a lot from reading Save It Like Safe hands, showing that even the savviest among us can be a bit more Yorkshire when it comes to saving money, no matter which county we live in.
