To help you get a good night’s sleep, your bedroom should be a calm and relaxing space with dark or muted colours and plenty of storage to help avoid clutter building up. If you’re thinking of re-doing your bedroom, this post is full of tips and tricks to help you completely redecorate without blowing your budget.
Budget Bedroom Makeover Ideas
Giving your bedroom a makeover doesn’t have to mean going all out with repainting or wallpapering. Sometimes just a few tweaks and changes can really make a difference such as new bedding, adding some new accessories or even rearranging furniture to make the room feel bigger.
1. Change The Lighting
Lighting can have a big impact on how a room looks. Lots of natural light can make a room feel bigger than it actually is and is usually encouraged in every other room in the house. However, your bedroom is a room you still need to sleep in so if you struggle sleeping on light evenings it may be worth investing in a blackout blind or buying new curtains online.
Bedroom lamps are a practical way to create a cosy feel in the evenings, especially if you’re someone that likes to stay up and read. One of my favourite places for budget lighting options is Wilkos, where there is a huge range to suit whatever you want to spend.
2. Buy a New Bed
The bed is, of course, the focal point of any bedroom.
First up, it’s worth seeing if there is anything you can do to improve your existing bed before buying new, such as replacing the headboard or buying a new mattress, check out Nolah Mattress for a high-quality bed delivered right to your door.
New bedding is another quick and cheap way to freshen up how a room looks and it’s easy to add some cushions and a throw to tie in with any theming you’ve gone for.
However, there may come a point when you need to invest in a new bed. I always recommend spending as much as you can comfortably afford on a new bed and mattress – while a mattress should be changed every eight to ten years, the bed frame itself can last much longer and you’ll be using it thousands of times.
As with everything, it’s worth shopping around and looking at smaller suppliers such as Dreamers Bed Centre – who sell beds in Wigan. Beds can provide extra storage so it’s worth thinking about whether this is something you’ll need.
It’s also worth keeping to more muted colours for your bed and headboard such as grey or cream that will go with a range of different bedroom decors, rather than say pink, that will need changing if you decide to redo your bedroom at a later date.
3. Don’t Just Paint The Walls
I love a good photo wall and usually like to mix up family photos with quotes or sayings and cute cartoon images or graphics.
Making your own quotes is really easy using a website like Canva or you could buy some to print at home via Etsy.
Getting photos printed doesn’t have to be expensive either – if you do a quick Google for ‘Free Photo Prints’ loads of companies will come up and you can take your pick.
4. Budget Furniture
Bedroom furniture can be expensive but there are a few things you can do to keep the cost down. Firstly, you could upcycle items you already have. There are lots of online tutorials with tips for repainting or even decoupaging furniture to give it a new lease of life.

Second-hand shops are also a great place to find bigger pieces like wardrobes and dressers, especially if you’re going for a vintage look.
Also, try Facebook marketplace for furniture being sold in your local area – you may even get lucky and find something for free!
Final Tips For A Budget Bedroom Makeover
- Keeping the walls and furniture the same neutral colours can make future bedroom updates cheaper and easier as you’ll only need to replace key accessories like bedding and cushions.
- Avoid very dark colours like black – I know this is often requested by teens but it takes a huge amount of effort and cost to cover up further down the line. Opt for black wallpaper or all-black accessories instead.
- Budget retailers such as Poundland often have amazing accessories and homeware range so it’s always worth a look.
- Ask friends and family if they have anything they are getting rid of before you go ahead and make purchases.
- Decluttering can make a room look bigger and nicer in a couple of hours – try this before starting any major decorating and see how you feel.
