47p Slow Cooker Beef Curry

47p Slow Cooker Beef Curry

This week we had a slow cooker beef curry which cost just 47p each with enough to feed our toddler too. While this post isn’t a recipe (I used a packet sauce and some sieved tomatoes!) it is a brilliant example of how you can use food from the reduced section, combined with offers from elsewhere – such as the shopping apps, to create super low-cost meals.

One thing I love to do is combining food from the reduced section with offers from the shopping apps, such as Checkoutsmart and Shopmium to make really cheap meals. People often struggle to come up with meals ideas with the things they find reduced so I’m putting together a few posts showing the different kinds of meals I make at home.

While I know not everyone will be able to find the bargains I did here, it does show it’s always worth taking a look to see what is available and then working it into a meal plan for the week.

This Slow Cooker beef curry was just 47p each

Braising Steak 18p (Reduced Section)

The braising steak and Naan bread were found in the reduced section in Morrison’s between Christmas and New Year and have been in the freezer waiting to be used ever since. While I’d normally use braising steak for a stew, we fancied a curry and didn’t have chicken in, so decided to use this instead.

Curry Sauce 10p (Checkoutsmart offer)

The curry sauce came from on an offer on Checkoutsmart last year where combining in-store supermarket offers with cashback saw a range of home pride slow cooker sauces down to 10p each. I bought eight, donated four to the foodbank and put the rest away in our ‘January Box’. We knew money was likely to be a bit tighter in January so we’d be stashing away lots of non-perishables to help keep our month’s food bill down.

Shopmium Review

If you fancy making your own curry sauce, I do have a Super Easy Curry Sauce Recipe here.

Passata 16p (half a carton)

I always buy basics Passata and had half a carton left from earlier in the week so used that up. The curry sauce ended up being quite thick so I added half a cup of water towards the end of cooking.

Naan breads 20p (Reduced Section)

The Naan Breads were another reduced section bargain, which had been in the freezer. Cooked from frozen the took around 15 minutes on gas mark six. We usually buy Lidl flatbreads at 45p for two so these were half of what we would usually spend.

Rice 25p & Tumeric 5p

I always measure out my rice to avoid waste (100grams person, which is more than suggested on the packet but my husband has a big appetite and it ensures there’s plenty for Aubrey to have some too) and I add a bit of turmeric to give a bit of flavour, probably less than half a teaspoon full. Cooked according to packet instructions and then rinsed in boiling water from the kettle.

TOTAL: 47p Per Person

I post loads of Frugal Meals over on my Instagram, I’d love it if you could come over and say hi!
