Sometimes it can be really hard to find the perfect gift. Whether it’s for a big birthday, a wedding or another occasion that requires something extra special knowing exactly what to buy can be hard. And that’s where a small business like Rocket & Co. comes in. Susie from Rocket & Co. makes the most beautiful hand-made artworks, that can be tailored to your exact specifications.

Rocket & Co. specializes in artworks featuring vintage maps, stamps and pictures cut from old children’s books, like the piece pictured below.

If you need some inspiration check out the Rocket & Co. website and facebook page  where there’s everything from families of polar bears to children’s name plaques cut from vintage comic books to beach huts cut from maps of Susie’s favorite seaside resorts. Oh and then there’s the birds and butterflies and music note pieces too.

However, if you know exactly what you want then Susie will be ready to bring your ideas to life – this is something she did for me last year when I needed an extra special gift for our wedding celebrant, David Parker. David and his wife Yvonne went above and beyond for us during and in the run up to our wedding and all the gifts we were coming up with just didn’t seem unique enough, especially for a couple who already seem to have everything they need.

When I got in touch with Susie it was really close to our wedding and I knew I’d left it too late to have something made in time. Since there is a bit of a design process involved if you do decide to order something remember it is a unique piece that will take time and care to make – so get in touch with her plenty of time ahead.

I had some ideas of what I wanted – Dave and Yvonne are keen walkers, dog lovers and kyakers so we decided to incorporate all of these into the design using maps of where they live, places they hike and the places they originate from.

‘Just so you know a bit about the process…I first put together a computer mock up so you can check, approve, or make any changes before I cut any of the maps out, that way we can work together to get it spot on’ Susie

Susie then sent over some mock ups of the design to ensure I was happy and then went ahead with creating my piece. It was amazing to see something I had imagined come to life right in front of my eyes! I was so happy with the piece when I collected it. I live locally but art works can be posted too.

I wasn’t there when the Dave and Yvonne opened their gift but the feedback was that they absolutely loved it (Yvonne cried when she realised all the places we had chosen were places they love. She can’t even talk about it without welling up!)

The cost of the artwork was £90. Not cheap, but worth every penny for something that is so beautifully and lovingly handmade. And of course this was a big, very detailed piece. More recently I ordered a love heart map as a wedding gift which was just as beautiful but only £15 – less than what you might spend on a decent bottle of bubbly but something that will be treasured forever.

Rocket & Co. is a one-woman show (well with a little help from her Mum sometimes!) and it’s so nice to support a local business here in Somerset.
