When I think of the summer, there’s one thing that springs to mind… relaxation. Sitting in the sun, listening to music and soaking in the rays is what it’s all about, but this vision isn’t always the reality.

In the UK, our summer often consists of very unpredictable weather with limited time to sit outside in your bikini! So, it got me thinking, surely there’s a shading solution I could put in my garden that allows for this relaxation all year round? Turns out I was right!

Pergolas with retractable roofs – the next best thing

I spoke to Designer Shade Solutions, pergola with retractable roof experts, about the best way to maximise your garden space all year round and they had all the answers. Have you heard of a pergola with a retractable roof? Or retractable louvre roofs? No? Well, neither had I but trust me you’ll want to know more!

Essentially, pergolas with retractable roofs are similar to your traditional wooden pergola structure, just with far more to offer. They have a roof which retracts, meaning it can close and shelter from rain and wind when needed, tilt to create shade or open for maximum sunlight. Wannabe Princess listed some other benefits of retractable pergolas including extending your living space, creating multi-purpose areas, providing shelter for outdoor dining and maximising outdoor spaces, what more could you ask for! They also provide a range of fabric awnings, if you were looking for something smaller.

One step further with bespoke

Designer Shade Solutions also offer an entirely bespoke service – how swish! The Rare Welsh Bit noted how they can customise your pergola with ‘heating, lighting and side-screens’, so you no longer have to wait for the summer to host that garden party!

They sell their pergolas in a range of materials from glass, metal, fabric and wood, meaning there’s a shading solution for every design aspect! Let’s also not forget that ‘anything that maximises the use of a home’s outdoor spaces can make the property more attractive to buyers’ as stated by Bob Villa.

Other ways to maximise outdoor comfort

As much as I could talk about UK retractable roof pergolas all day, I should probably give some other tips for outdoor comfort! So, let’s see. I would recommend furnishing your pergola with comfy seating such as dining furniture, lounger chairs or an outdoor sofa.

Then, you can add colour and extra decorations to this with cushions or blankets (not that you’d need one if you had a retractable pergola with integrated heating!). Finally, add some music, maybe a BBQ, candles and extra lighting so that everyone will want to retreat to your garden this summer, and winter for that case.

So, what do you think?

Are you convinced? Will you be buying a pergola with a retractable roof this summer to utilise your outdoor space? I know I will, the idea of relaxing outside rain or sun sounds pretty good to me! Maybe check out Designer Shade Solutions for more shading ideas and kit out your garden.
