Who doesn’t love a freebie at Christmas? Here’s how you can turn a free Primark paper bag into gift wrap and tags!
While Primark doesn’t have a reputation for being the most environmentally friendly business, they do provide affordable clothing for thousands of British families and I know lots of people will be shopping there this Christmas.
My husband shopped there this weekend and I was pleased to see they had added festive red stripes to their classic brown bags, encouraging people to re-use them as wrapping paper.
I love trying to be more environmentally friendly at Christmas so I pounced on his paper bag to wrap up some presents (hence why it’s a little battered – he forgot I wanted to use it and put it in the recycling! It’s not likely he’ll shop at Primark again any time soon so I decide to use it anyway for a couple of our daughter gifts – she won’t mind the odd crinkle!)
It’s worth noting that Primark isn’t the only business to do this – Fatface bags can also be reused as wrapping paper too. I’ll keep this post updated with any other brands I notice doing this too!
Benefits To Paper Bag Wrapping
This year, if you shop at Primark, then you can turn your paper bag into gift wrap. Here are some of the reasons this is a great idea:
- Free wrapping paper – yay.
- Environmentally friendly – your paper bag gets used twice instead of just once.
- Glitter and Foil free – these types of wrapping are both super hard to recycle.
- Awesome if you run out of wrapping paper but have a Primark bag lying around.
- Also includes paper gift tags.

Turn Your Primark Bag Into Free Christmas Giftwrap
Using your Primark bag as gift wrap couldn’t be easier. Simply cut to size like you would with normal wrapping paper.
The side panel of the bag has gift tags marked out, you can just cut around these and then add a hole with a hole punch. They can then be threaded with string or twine to finish your gifts.

Primark paper bags are quite thick so the paper didn’t rip while I was wrapping up the presents. I did find that it was slightly trickier to get my sticky tape to stick to it though! If you want a more environmentally friendly option then there are lots of recyclable tapes on Etsy.

Recycling Your Primark Bag After Christmas
If you’ve used sticky tape or sellotape you’ll need to remove all of this before placing your Primark paper bag wrapping into the recycling.
If you used recyclable tape then everything can go straight into the recycling bin once presents have been opened on Christmas morning.
Other Eco-Friendly Wrapping Ideas
While turning your Primark bag into wrapping paper is one eco-friendly way of wrapping, there are lots more ideas you could try for some of your other Christmas gifts.
- Avoid glitter and foil wrap at all costs. These can’t be recycled and glitter can contaminate other items that could ordinarily be recycled. Some supermarkets, such as M&S have stopped using glitter in their own brand cards and wrap.
- Use items that can be used again such as silk scarves or tea towels. These could be purchased in the January sales or from charity shops.
- Make your own wrap using brown kraft paper and stamps or paints. This is a great way to get kids involved.
- Embellish your Christmas gifts with natural and edible materials like dried oranges, pinecones, rosemary, holly and cinnamon.
