Frugal Hobbies: Quiz Night

If you follow me on any social media, you might have noticed that I attend a monthly quiz night. I usually mention it as it’s my absolute favourite night out – it’s great fun, reasonably cheap and there’s the chance of winning some cold hard cash. Plus, I bloody love quizzing.
I realise this might make me sound like a bit of an old lady, but I’ve been attending the same monthly quiz night, at the same bar (which just happens to be my favourite bar in my hometown) for over four years now. In those four years, I think I’ve missed a total of five quizzes, two for holidays, two for work and one when I’d just given birth to my little girl and I wasn’t quite ready to leave her yet.
Frugal Hobbies: Quiz Night
I make being able to go to quiz night a priority because I enjoy it so much and I would far rather do this then go to a club or even a venue with live music. Over the years we’ve gotten to know the bar owners, the bar staff and of course the lovely quizmaster himself. I’m a firm believer in doing things that make you happy and while this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I absolutely love it.
So, just for fun, here are my reasons Quiz Night at my local is my favourite thrifty hobby.
1. Quiz night only costs £2.50 to enter
The quiz I go to costs £2.50 per person to enter. That’s less than the cost of a cinema ticket, even with Meerkat movies. It usually runs for around three hours give or take and we usually arrive early for a bit of a natter first. I think that’s a very small price to pay for an evening filled with fun, banter, laughter and the chance to win £80+.
2. Mid-week Means Drink offers
As I rarely drink at home, on quiz night I do usually indulge in a couple of alcoholic beverages. During the week, cocktails are on offer at 2 for £10 which is what I usually drink while I’m quizzing. Of course, if I’m not drinking, then the night is even cheaper. When I was pregnant the bar staff used to make me orange juice and lemonade in a cocktail glass with all the trimmings so I didn’t feel too left out!
3. Fun with Friends
My quiz team consists of myself, two of my oldest school friends and another good friend I used to work with (he’s our secret weapon as we three ladies know nothing about sport and aren’t particularly well versed in his specialist subject of world flags either).
Quiz night is a great way for us to hang out and catch up but because the focus is on quizzing rather than eating or drinking I think generally we spend less than we would if were doing something else or were solely meeting for drinks.
Of course, it also helps that the quizmaster is lovely, friendly and great fun. I’ve been to quizzes at other venues which are very serious and super difficult to the point where we were bored. I think finding the right quiz for your knowledge level definitely helps.
4. Quiz Night: Prizes to be Won
At this quiz, the first prize is £20 and a round of drinks.
The second prize is a round of drinks.
However, there is also a monthly jackpot that is either won or rolled over and added to for the next month.
To be in with a chance of winning this you have to answer a very difficult question, without your team, in front of the whole bar.
To get the chance to answer the very difficult question, during the quiz you have to get all of three ‘star’ questions correct. If no team manages this feat then all of the team names go in a hat and one is chosen at random – I’ll be honest, this is what usually happens.
We have won the quiz on a total of two occasions so far.
We have won the Jackpot round once, despite going up to answer the very difficult question on at least ten evenings and guessing it the one time I did win.
But honestly, I don’t even care. We all enjoy taking part so much it’s never really about winning.
5. Cheaper than my younger nights out
I think enjoying quiz night is definitely a sign of my age. In my early twenties, I used to go out drinking every weekend, probably spending a minimum of £50 between taxis, food, drinks and club entry. I think it’s pretty rare I spend more than £15 a month on quiz night – a couple of my favourite cocktails, three hours of being thoroughly entertained and no hangover in the morning is worth every penny.
