Blogging: Logo Design Ideas

When you start blogging, everything can seem a bit overwhelming. There are so many different things to think about from your blog’s design and layout, to where to legally source images to the best place for hosting (It’s definitely Lyrical Host!).
You may also be thinking about a logo for your blog. This can be tricky as initially you may not want to spend loads of having one designed for you but may not feel confident designing one yourself. This post will talk about some logo design ideas and the best way to implement them on your blog.
One thing I’m willing to admit is that design is not my strong point. I’m not arty at all and I can’t draw for toffee. What I love about blogging is writing and while that is a big part of what I do as a full-time blogger, I still want my website to look nice and be easy to navigate. I also wanted a blog that doesn’t look exactly the same as every other blog out there which is why I’ve done some of the design work myself, including my current logo.
I actually didn’t think my logo was particularly awesome when I first uploaded it – but after seeing it two blogger friends contacted me to ask who had designed it so I guess it can’t be too bad! It’s definitely worth having a play about yourself before forking out for a graphic designer and I think there are more important things to spend money on when you first start blogging, such as going self-hosted.
Blog Logo Design Ideas
There are lots of different ways to go about designing your logo. Some people may prefer to have one that is all words, other may prefer it to be image-heavy. On my logo for this website, I did play about with adding money related images such as coins and pound signs but wasn’t happy with how any of them looked so decided just to leave it as it was – text only. If you want your logo to stand out you could purchase a specific font to use, such as a script font. I really like the Jealous script font pictured below which would be perfect for a lifestyle or beauty blog.
If you decide to choose images for your logo design you need make sure they are royalty-free by using a website such as unsplash. Most images online are copyrighted so googling what you want and just using it is a big no-no. It could also get you in a lot of trouble as many artists and photographers will sue if you use their images without permission.
Alternatively, you could choose to pay a small fee to use certain images – some places sell them for as little as $1 each and this is what I used to design the logo below for my new food blog. You could also use a custom font to create a sign off for each blog post – these work well if your blog is diary style and you end with your name eg. ‘Love, Fiona’
If you didn’t want pay for a font to use then you could try a free font download instead. Choosing a font in this way rather than using the ones provided in the design programme you are using should really help your logo stand out.
Other ways to use your logo
It’s also worth thinking about all the other places you’ll be using your blog logo – across social media on twitter, facebook and Pinterest. I use mine on my PayPal invoices and on my emails too. Changing your logo in all these different places can be quite a faff so it’s worthing trying to come up with something you really like from the outset rather than having the hassle of changing it at a later date.
Final things to consider when designing a blog logo
There are a few final things that should be taken into consideration when designing a blog logo:
- Is the font easy to read? While fancy script fonts are lovely it needs to be clear what the name of your blog is.
- Colours – make sure the colour is dark enough it can be read easily. It’s also worth thinking about how your logo will look on different backgrounds.
- Don’t forget your logo is a big part of your branding – choose colours that will work elsewhere on your blog and stick to a maximum of three.
- If you’re unsure of what fonts go together have a quick google of ‘matching fonts’ and there should be plenty of examples to help you decide.
