If you’re currently missing your favourite yoga classes or you just want to exercise more, you may have decided to start practising yoga at home. There are lots of ways to do from joining in with a 30 day Yoga Challenge to watching videos on Youtube. Here are my tips for a stress-free and relaxing home yoga workout.

Tips For A Home Yoga Workout

1. Make Sure You Have A Good Yoga Mat

While yoga is an easy and relatively inexpensive way of exercising, it is worth investing in a good yoga mat. A good yoga mat will provide you with a stable and non-slip surface which should help prevent injury.

The thickness of your yoga mat should be considered too – the thicker the mat the more comfort it will provide when doing floor work. However, this can make it bulkier to carry around when you do eventually get back to doing in-person classes.

2. Create Space & Stay Safe During Your Home Yoga Workout

Having a safe and relaxing space to practice yoga is so important for getting the most out of your session. Remember to clear away any unnecessary clutter and move away from any large objects you could end up falling on or banging in to.

Ideally, the space you use should be tidy to allow your mind and body to relax while you workout.

While lots of yoga classes have music, candles and incense you don’t actually need any of these to get started with yoga at home. However, you may find they help you get into the right frame of mind for your workout so if that’s the case then go ahead with them!

3. Find The Right Online Classes For You

If you’re using online classes then you’ll need to do some research to figure out which ones are the best for you.

While there are literally thousands out there, I think it’s important to choose someone who you feel connected with and whose voice is pleasant to listen to.

You’ll also need to find the right video for your level of ability. You definitely don’t want to end up taking a hard class and ending up with an injury.

4. Set Aside A Clear Time

One way to make sure you get regular exercise is to make it part of your daily and weekly routine. While it’s totally fine to have rest days, on the days you do practice yoga at home, make sure you have a clear time set aside.

Ideally, this should be a time when you won’t be interrupted although I know having a toddler myself it isn’t always the easiest to find when you have children or a busy work schedule. That said you could try including children in your yoga class.

Help yourself to get the most out of your workout by turning off your phone, Alexa and anything else that could end up being a distraction.

What Are The Benefits Of Doing Yoga At Home?

There are quite a few benefits of stretching and doing yoga at home a few of which I am going to take a look at below.

It’s Budget Friendly

Doing yoga from the comfort of your own home is a super budget-friendly option – especially if you’re just getting started and aren’t sure whether you’ll like it.

As well of hundreds of free online classes you can also pick up yoga work out DVDs cheaply too.

If you’re more experienced at yoga, it should be fairly easy to devise your own workout to do at home if you feel you need a break from in-person classes.

It’s Good For Beginners

If you’re just getting started with yoga you might be unsure whether it’s for you. Doing some practice at home with videos or DVDs may help you decide whether you want to take a leap with a proper yoga class.

It’s Less Social

While some people prefer the social aspect of an in-person yoga class others may find they prefer to work out alone at home. It also means you only have to stick to your own schedule – so no worries about finishing work late or a missed bus to get to a class on time.

It’s Easy To Switch Things Up

Working out with an online class or video means it’s really easy to change it to something else if you find it’s too hard or too easy for you.

You Can Take It Outside

Working out at home doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. You can take your workout to your garden, balcony or any other outdoor space you have access to.

You Can Relax And Enjoy Your Workout

And Finally . . . Relax and Enjoy. Yoga is a fantastic form of exercise designed to bring calm while you workout.
