Making DIY Kraft Tag Wedding Place Names

To save money when we got married, we did loads of things ourselves, including all of the decoration and set up of the wedding. These DIY Kraft Wedding place names were one of the simpler projects we attempted and one of my favourites for how simple and elegant they look.
When you’re planning a wedding there are loads of ways to save money and I’ll admit the majority of them involve doing things yourself rather than paying someone else to do them.
We attempted loads of DIY projects for our wedding including a DIY Photobooth, Harry Potter Sweet Table, making our own bouquets (this was a fail, we ended up getting a florist in the end!) and making all of our own table place names, table numbers and seating charts. It was a lot of work, and I’m not 100% I’d do all of it again!
However, there were some things we made that I really love and these super simple and easy DIY wedding place names were one of them.

How lovely do these look? The wax flowers were provided by my lovely florist. If you’re short of time, there is a chance to get bouquets and flowers quickly. Find more info.
Making DIY Kraft Tag Wedding Place Names
We used these items to create our DIY wedding name places.
- Brown Kraft Tags (£1.90)
- Alterntively you could use white tags (£1.50)
- vintage stamp set (£.3.90 with delivery)
- a black ink pad (£1.99)
The cost is around £8 to make 100 tags but of course, the stamp set and ink could be used for other projects. If you need less than 100 place names then leftover tags could be used for labelling gifts or saved and used for Christmas and Birthdays.
I’ve actually seen letter sets in Poundland too, although I’m unsure if it’s something they sell all the time, it’s certainly worth keeping an eye out if you’d like to bring the cost of these down further.
Creating your Kraft Tag Wedding Place Names
As well as the items mentioned above there are a few other things you’ll need before starting, including a list of all of your wedding guests and some blank sheets of paper to have a practice on.
Even though this is a very simple and easy project, it does require a bit of concentration so it’s worth setting aside some time just to get it done, ideally when you won’t be disturbed by children or other household distractions. That said, older children may actually be able to help with this one as it is so easy.
You’ll also need to decide whether you want to keep things formal, using either full names or Christian names or whether you’re happy to be more relaxed and use nicknames and relatives names such as Aunty so and so. Consider that if you choose to include surnames it will more than double the time spent on the project, as last names do tend to be longer.
Remember there is no right or wrong here, just worth thinking these through before starting and prevent having to remake them all at a later date.
Step by step Guide To Making Kraft Wedding Place Names
- Start by having a good practice with the stamps on some paper. It does take a few goes to get the hang of pressing into the ink firmly enough and getting the spacing right between the letters.
- Do not thread the string onto tags before starting – this should be done afterwards so the tags can lie flat when being stamped.
- Make sure there is plenty of room to place the tags to dry once they have been stamped – we don’t want any smudges!
- The easiest way to make sure you don’t miss anyone is to gradually go through the wedding guest list and ticking off names one by one. Be sure to double-check spellings and include initials or surnames if there is more than one person with the same Christian name.
- It’s likely you’ll make the odd mistake or smudge – don’t worry – this happens with all types of crafts. It’s worth making sure you have extra labels/tags so these can be remade easily.
- Once everyone’s name has been stamped gather them together and add the string. It’s worth doing this now rather than when they are being put out at the wedding – your future self will thank you!
- Keep some tags and ink handy in the run-up to the wedding – guest lists can change last minute! This is one of the reasons this is such a great project – new labels could be made on the day if needed, with a minimum of fuss.
