Super Thrifty Candle Hack

I love candles and although I now use them rather less than I did pre-toddler, I do love the ambience they bring to a room, especially in the evening. I also like to use them to get rid of particularly strong cooking smells or when I’ve finished cleaning to give the room a nice fresh scent.
One thing any candle lover will know though is that they don’t always burn evenly. This means the wick ends up ‘drowning’ often with a build-up of wax being left around the edges of the glass or jar the candle is contained within.

While I know this leftover wax can be repurposed, such as making your own wax melts, it’s not something everyone has the time or inclination to do. One solution is to buy expensive candles – I find the wax build-up doesn’t happen nearly so with the big brands such as Yankee and Woodwick, however, these are expensive options which I know won’t be suitable for everyone.
I do like to try and use all of everything I buy and prevent and eliminate waste where I can. Which is why I was pleased when I discovered this super thrifty candle hack. Using this trick I was able to get an extra 20 hours burning time from just one candle. And now I know what to do, I’ll certainly be using it more in the future too – meaning I’ll be saving money as each candle will last longer and will be getting more use, so less waste overall too.
All you need for this hack is a small amount of tin foil. Simply shape the tinfoil into circle and place around the top of the glass, tin or jar where your candle is. If the candle is quite deep or well burnt down you’ll need to put the tin foil inside the vessel for it to work.
The foil works as a conductor and helps the remaining wax to burn more evenly, giving you many more candle burning hours for your money. And of course, the foil can be used over and over again, it doesn’t need to be new for each new candle you use it on.
