Last year I wrote about how I planned to buy as many Christmas gifts as I could second hand. I didn’t want to share them in case any of the recipients saw them, but of course, now Christmas is over I can write about what I bought. Here are my second hand Christmas gifts.

While I didn’t buy quite as much as I would have liked second hand this Christmas, I definitely felt it was a good start to having a more eco-conscious festive period.

Here are some of the main reasons to think about shopping second hand at Christmas:

  • It saves money – one of the toys I bought for my daughter would have been £35 new – it was £3.50 second hand and as a three-year-old, she really didn’t mind in the slightest.
  • It’s better for the environment – less plastic and packaging and items being reused instead of being thrown away.
  • Buying second hand supports Charities whose fundraising will have been  badly affected by the pandemic
  • Second-hand doesn’t have to mean used. There are plenty of brand new gifts out there, either still boxed or with tags still attached.
  • Buying from Vinted or Facebook helps support other families who might be struggling.
  • Your money will go further meaning you can buy better quality or buy gifts that might have been out of budget if they were new.

My Secondhand Christmas Gifts

This jacket was a gift for my Aunt – she loves charity and vintage shopping so I know she won’t mind that it’s second hand and it’s exactly her style. To be honest, the photo doesn’t really do it justice!

The condition of the jacket is immaculate and similar jackets from the same brand are around £40 new so this was definitely a bargain.

This was from Vinted, brand new and in the box. It’s for my friend’s little lad who loves making potions and is a big Harry Potter fan. It cost about the same as buying new once delivery was included but as I’d rather buy second-hand I was happy to pay that.

Yup, I’ve seen all the memes saying women don’t want smellies for Christmas but it’s something my mum always requests. Yardleys is her favourite and this was £3.50 from a Teenage Cancer Trust shop.

There are loads of unopened smellies sets in Charity shops, especially before Christmas so worth looking out for it’s something you’d usually buy and will generally be cheaper too. Plus you’re supporting charities.

This dress (which I know needs an iron – I did Iron it before wrapping it up to give to her!) is also for my Mum.

There was this and another identical dress with the pattern in black which she bought when we were shopping together. She loves the black version and says she really regrets not buying both! She was so chuffed when I gave this to her on Christmas Day and can’t wait to wear it in the summer.

My Plans For A Second Hand Christmas

All of our daughter’s gifts from us were second hand this year and you can read more about it in this post.

My favourite buy was this Happy Land Ferris wheel for £3.50 which is usually around £35 new. It’s in used condition but she’s not going to mind & it means less plastic waste (forgot to take pics before wrapping)

I also bought this elf game for £1 which was a perfect stocking filler! In total, I spent under £40 on all of her gifts and stocking bits and the only things not bought second hand were some sweets and chocolate!

Next year I’d really like to be able to buy even more gifts second hand. I think I’ll have to start looking out for them a bit earlier!
