Even if you don’t fancy getting the paint out, there are plenty of ways to spruce up your bedroom and give it a whole new look. From new cosy cushions to funky and fashionable lighting, I am going to take a look at the ways you can transform your bedroom without even so much a whiff of paint.

There are lots of reasons you may feel like your bedroom needs updating. It could be that you want to make it into a more relaxing and calming space. You may want to get rid of dated furniture or find a way to store all the clutter that has built up.

How To Spruce Up Your Bedroom Without Painting

If the thought of painting or even wallpapering fills you with dread then sprucing up your bedroom doing everything but those things could well be the way forward. While painting is a quick and easy way to update a room, it’s also time-consuming and messy.

Even if you don't fancy getting the paint out, there are plenty of ways to spruce up your bedroom and give it a whole new look. From new cosy cushions to funky and fashionable lighting, I am going to take a look at the ways you can transform your bedroom without even so much a whiff of paint.

1. Switch Up Your Soft Furnishings

Changing your soft furnishings or even your entire bed can really change the feel of your room.

If you have a neutral colour on the walls such as cream or grey then you can use your curtains, bedding and other soft furnishings to add a splash of colour.

You could also consider a new headboard to help spruce things up a bit.

Soft furnishings can also be used to add texture. I am a big fan of a big fluffy blanket on the bed for those colder nights.

Cushions may seem decorative but can be used to provide extra support if you’re sat up in bed reading or watching television.

If you do choose to invest in a new bed, Simba’s beds are a great option and you could combine with a refurbished mattress to help keep costs down.

A new duvet can bring a new colour scheme together. I’ve recently been testing out Asda’s range of super-budget bedding where a king-size duvet costs just £7.50 and is made from recycled materials.

Remember to keep things restful – the bedroom is not the place for bright funky colour palettes. Try pastel shades or if you do want something a bit brighter dark jewel tones work well too.

2. Declutter, Declutter, Declutter

I find that my bedroom always feels much better once I get rid of some of the clutter. If you’re lacking in storage space you may find that clutter seems to build up quite quickly and can make the room feel less relaxing than you would like.

Being really ruthless when it comes to clutter can be hard, but here are a few hacks to try and help you with it:

  • Turn all the hangers in your closet the wrong way around. When you wear and rehang something, place the hanger back the right way. Give yourself a time frame and see how many of your clothes you have worn. Get rid of those you haven’t
  • Make use of the space on the backs of doors and the tops of wardrobes.
  • Get inspired – Netflix has a plethora of shows that talk about decluttering and how to decide what to get rid of.

3. Add Some Framed Pictures or Prints

Adding some framed pictures or a print to your bedroom is a great way to spruce it up with needing to do any real decorating. It’s great for your budget too – small prints are easy to create at home and places like Wilkos and Ikea offer cheap frames.

I think three A3 prints or posters hug over the bed looks amazing but you could even go all out for a photo wall if you wanted to. Typically pictures and prints look better hung in odd numbers.

4. Find Some New Storage Solutions

After all that decluttering, you’ll want to make sure you have decent storage for all the things you want to keep.

Storage can be an issue, especially in small rooms and if we don’t have a place to store things rooms can end up feeling cluttered, messy and not at all relaxing. Here are some tips for finding storage solutions when you don’t have much room.

  • There are lots of hacks for storing jewellery – from using storage containers hidden in drawers to using a corkboard with pins for earrings. Pinterest has loads of ideas if you need some inspiration.
  • A small ‘dump box’ for everyday items like keys, hairbands and lip balm can keep these items together without them looking messy.
  • Ikea has lots of amazing storage options and most of them are pretty budget-friendly too. Kallax units are a firm favourite for anywhere in the house but especially in children’s bedrooms.

5. Update Your Lighting

Lighting is important in the bedroom. Our main light shade has a gold lining which helps make the light in the room softer. While this is great for relaxing, it’s not so great for putting on make-up! I also have a small lamp beside my bed for when I want to read.

For a larger room, you could choose a standard lamp to help create a restful atmosphere. For a small room, a pair of bedside lamps could work well. If you don’t have the space for bedside tables, then you could buy lamps that can be attached directly to the wall.

Fairy Lights are an excellent way to add some soft lighting to any bedroom, especially children’s bedrooms. Plus, they can be picked up very cheaply, so they make an excellent budget option for updating your lighting.
