I recently tried an Earth and Wheat wonky bread box. This post takes a look at exactly what my box contained and whether I thought it was worth the money. Keep reading for my Earth and Wheat review.
Firstly I want to start by saying I got my box for free on a special offer that Earth and Wheat were running.
This was an offer that was open to everyone (not just bloggers) and there was no expectation from the brand of me reviewing the products which is why this post isn’t marked as an ad.
As someone who writes a lot about yellow stickers and reducing food waste, I thought this was the perfect opportunity for me to try out something that aims to prevent bread from ending up in a landfill.
What Is A Wonky Bread Box?
Earth and Wheat work closely with various suppliers to rescue any bread that might be thrown away because of imperfections or due to being surplus to requirements.
Imperfections are generally pretty minor such as tortillas or crumpets not being quite round enough to be sold as they usually would.
Earth and Wheat take all of this excess bread and sell it at a discounted price.
As you can see from the picture below, some of the items are imperfect but still perfectly edible. These crumpets were not quite as round as you would expect, but still tasted fine.
Is The Bread Stale?
Absolutely nothing was stale in the box I was sent.
My bread box arrived on the 21st of February and there were two items dated for the 24th. Everything else was dated until the 28th.
I’m someone who typically ignores use-by and best-before dates anyway. Plus even if the odd item is slightly stale, there is plenty you can do with stale bread such as making breadcrumbs.
How Long Does The Bread Last?
The majority of the bread in the box had a week’s date on it, so I would assume these were imperfect items. These were products that you would typically expect to last a little while such as pitta bread and crumpets.
As there was quite a lot in the box I did freeze some of the items as I knew we wouldn’t eat them all in time. We like crumpets but weren’t going to get through 24 in a week!

Was My Earth And Wheat Wonky Bread Box Worth The Money?
As my box was free then I would say yes, the box was totally worth the money!
I’ll be honest and say I’ve seen Earth and Wheat wonky bread boxes pop up on my social media quite a bit and been a bit put off by the price.
A lot of the comments on social media were from people who had received mostly crumpets and wraps and not a huge amount of variety in their boxes.
However, on further investigation, it does seem as though some people may have ordered the cheaper ‘essentials’ box which from the website doesn’t look as though it wouldn’t be such good value or provide as much variety.
As someone who mostly buys yellow sticker bread, pancakes and other bakery products I was put also off because I didn’t think I’d find one of these boxes good value for money in comparison to what I usually buy.
Even though I love the concept of a wonky bread box and it does include free delivery, £8.99 seems like a lot to spend on bread products when you don’t really know what you’ll be getting.
It’s way more than we’d usually spend on bread in a week and even though we could freeze some of it we’d still need to buy everyday bread for sandwiches and toast too.
I will say that I was pleased with what was in my box. If there was a guarantee that future boxes contained a minimum number of different products or one or two artisan-style products then I would be tempted to buy another box as an occasional treat. However, it’s not something I would subscribe to monthly.
One thing I did enjoy about the box was that it made us change up our meal planning a little bit as we planned a few meals around all the flatbreads and wraps we had.

Earth And Wheat Review: Would I Recommend Earth & Wheat?
Yes, overall I would definitely recommend Earth & Wheat. My box came pretty quickly the products were fresh and I love the ethos of a company that is preventing food waste.
Cancelling your subscription online is easy (if you decide not to order a one-off box) which is always a bonus.
If you’re someone who loves getting a meal box or any type of surprise box in the post in then this is definitely a great place to start. Earth and Wheat also offer wonky veg boxes so if that’s something you enjoy it might also be worth taking a look at.
As you can probably see from my post, the majority of the bread does come wrapped in plastic. Earth and Wheat have addressed this on their social media and said they have struggled to come up with a suitable sustainable alternative but are open to ideas.
While ideally, I would like to reduce the amount of plastic we buy, I felt this was no different from the amount of plastic there would have been had we bought the items from the supermarket.
Overall, I would recommend giving Earth and Wheat a try especially if you can order your first box for a discounted price.
